This necklace was popular in mainstream culture circa 1996 and became passe a year later. However, it is still alive and well in the Christian sector. Pukka shell necklaces are favored by Christian men who play guitar and wear flip-flops.

They were big in the mid-late 70s, actually...
FWIW - the Hawaiian word is "Puka" which is a hole through something.
